Credits: 5 ECTS.
Language: English.
Courses: Each session with the ten invited arbitration partners at international law firms begins with an interview with Prof. Douglas to explore the partner’s career path and to elicit that partner’s insights on the qualities and qualifications that are important for an associate in an international arbitration practice. The interview concludes with an insider’s view on the hiring process at the partner’s law firm and then a question-and-answer session with the audience.
Following the interview, the invited partner provides an in-depth analysis of a particular topic in international arbitration with an emphasis on how the issues discussed play out in actual cases. The objective is to provide a practical account of the topic which goes beyond what can be derived from academic texts.
There are also presentations by legal counsel at the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) and the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA).
In addition to the formal program, there are two cocktail events in the evenings hosted by Freshfields and Cleary Gotlieb in Rome as well as a gala dinner. For those who wish to extend their stay over the weekend, a visit to the Vatican Museums is organized on 31 January 2026.
