Program Overview

The Luiss Summer School on International Trade and Food Law provides an in-depth and practice-oriented analysis of contemporary trade relations in the agri-food sector, with a specific focus on the European Union’s commercial partnerships with some of its most strategic global counterparts.

The core of the program is dedicated to the study of trade agreements between the European Union and key partners, including the United States, Canada, China, Japan, and the member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Through a comparative legal approach, participants will examine how these agreements address market access, regulatory cooperation, geographical indications, sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures, sustainability clauses, and dispute settlement mechanisms in the food sector.

The opening day of the Summer School is devoted to the most recent and strategically significant negotiations concluded by the EU, with particular attention to the agreement with Mercosur and India. These sessions will explore the legal architecture, political sensitivities, and economic implications of these agreements, especially in relation to agricultural trade, environmental standards, and food safety regulation.

By combining doctrinal analysis with policy discussion and real-world case studies, the program enables participants to understand the evolving landscape of international trade law in the agri-food domain and to critically assess the balance between trade liberalization, regulatory autonomy, and sustainable development.
